somnule: This is beta-cyclodextrin, the active ingredient in Febreze. It actually binds odor molecules and makes them unable to bind your olfactory receptors. Eventually it gets heavy enough with smell particles that it falls to the floor and you can wash it away. I always thought Febreze just overpowered other scents, but apparently there’s some actual scientific engineering going on here. Why bother with the terrible perfumes, then?
